Summer festival events filling up, volunteers needed

By Adam Strunk

A few days out from the Sand Creek Summer Daze, nearly all of the events for the inaugural three-day festival at Athletic Park are full.

Greg Hanson, organizer of the festival featuring food, music, parades, boating, kids’ activities and competitions, said he’s feeling confident about the event that will take place Aug. 17 through Aug. 19.

According to Hanson, the event’s volleyball tournament is completely full, with 17 teams participating. The event’s human foosball tournament is full, with six teams participating.

Thirteen teams will participate in the event’s home brew competition. At least 12 teams will participate in the event’s juried barbecue competition.

“I’d say it would be a great family event time,” Hanson said. “There will be 20-plus booths of kids’ activities.”

Hanson has one need.

“We’re in need of volunteers,” he said. “Saturday evening we’re looking for volunteers and just a few more spots on other days.”

Hanson said that he’s working to make sure large amounts of volunteers are present to make things go off without a hitch. He said in all event organizers want about 120 volunteers to work at the festival and there are still plenty of spots open in that regard.

So many volunteers are needed because the festival has a lot of things going on.

The event opens with a parade featuring at least 15 boats in Sand Creek followed by an opening ceremony and a free concert of three local bands, Sam Unruh, Amber Goldermann and the Sassanachs.

The next day starts with a 5K, volleyball tournament and boat races.

Hanson said the boat race, Paddle Palooza, could still use a few more competitors.

A home build boat race sponsored by Newton Now called the Cardboard Regatta is still taking applicants as well.

Throughout the day, there will be pontoon boat rides on Sand Creek.

“I think the boat rides will be pretty big,” Hanson said.

There will be a food truck rally starting at 11 a.m.

There will be an ice cream eating competition on 2:30 p.m. Saturday that hands out free ice cream to the first 600 attendants.

In the evening, a paid concert will feature Paramount and Bootleg Mercy covering music from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Finally, the event concludes Sunday with two of its biggest competitions, the Hard Redz Brew Off at 12:30 p.m. and the Saucy and Glazed barbecue competition and beer fest at 2 p.m.

With a ticket purchase for the competition, people can eat barbecue and drink craft beer in the afternoon.
