From the Bethel Athletic Department
NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The first home football game for any collegiate program is always filled with buzz and excitement, but this Saturday is a bit more special than usual for the Bethel Threshers.
Bethel will kick off their season by hosting Ottawa University on September 1st, at 7:05 PM, with this game being featured as the “ESPN3 Game of the Week” for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
This marks the first year every member institution of the KCAC will be able to host a game on ESPN3, with Bethel being given the first of the season. As you can imagine, the excitement is in the air.
“This Saturday’s game is much anticipated for so many reasons,” offered athletic director Tony Hoops.
“Coach Harrison takes the field for his Thresher debut, Booster Club will hold their membership drive with a free meal for all current and interested members before the game, Hellas construction will dedicate the new turf, and ESPN3 covering the event. It’s going to be fun-filled night our fans do not want to miss out on!”
What exactly does all of this mean for you, as a fan?
If you are able to be in the stands for this historic event, the Bethel athletic department asks that you wear your maroon and grey proudly. If you forget, you may be covered. The first 150 fans entering the game will receive an iconic ESPN Thresher Gameday shirt.
If you are unable to attend, you can still witness the game through the camera lenses of a real-life ESPN production. Fans can access the broadcast online, by clicking this link, or by typing into your web browser the following URL: http://bit.ly/OUvsBCespn3
These links will also be found on the schedule for Thresher Football on our website, which you can find directly by clicking here. It should be noted to our fans watching from home that the Thresher Sports Network (usually with a video broadcast link here) will not be live for this game, so as to make sure everyone can enjoy this unique broadcasting experience ESPN3 is providing.
Thresher Athletics also wants you to know that this will be a grand event, besides the added benefit of it being on ESPN3.
“Saturday will be a day filled with Thresher Activities beginning with softball starting at 11am, alumni volleyball game at 3pm, and then the football game festivities following. It’s a great day to preview several Thresher athletic teams this year.”
The Bethel College Booster Club will be holding a membership drive before the game, beginning at 5:00 PM. Fans are welcome to come by, grab a hamburger or hot dog, and even join in on the fun by setting up a tailgate yourselves! A designated tailgate location will be marked, and will take place on the east side of the stadium parking lot next to the grass by the tennis courts.
Athletic Director Hoops stated that he hopes fans will “bring their trucks, grills, and outdoor games to make Thresher Stadium come alive all afternoon.”
The Office of Student Life will also be out there beginning at 5:30 PM to join in on the festivities with cornhole competitions and several other games played next to the tailgate area. Be one of the first 150 students to arrive to this to receive your free ESPN Thresher Gameday Shirt.
There are a few other things of noteworthiness which will be going on during the game:
- There will be a tent along the home sidewalk where fans can claim a piece of the old, original turf from Thresher Stadium! A freewill donation will get you a piece of Thresher history, dating back to the instillation of the turf in 2005
- Fans can purchase “Rally Rags” from the Bethel Softball program, being sold next to the turf donations
- With it being a nation-wide broadcast put on by ESPN3, there will be media timeouts and longer extended periods of break for commercials. Expect live performances from the Bethel Cheer program and Threshold Band during these periods, which will be indicated by the timeout media coordinator coming out onto the field intermittently during the game.
- The halftime show will feature the turf dedication, as the new turf project was completed earlier this month in time for the 2018 fall season. Hellas Construction, the company responsible for the instillation of the beautiful new turf, will be present for this ceremony
