Obituary: Vernon F. Dreier

Vernon F. Dreier, 70, of Hesston died?Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1945, in Newton, the son of Delbert F. and Dorothy May Steiner Dreier. Vernon graduated from Moundridge High School in 1963 and later from Bethany College. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 until 1971 where he was a musician at the NATO Base in Naples, Italy.
Vernon married Jeanne Ratzlaff on July 15, 1972, in Henderson, Neb. They had lived in Newton and Kansas City for a short time before settling in Hesston.
For 20 years, Vernon was an instrumental music teacher. In 1978, he started Dreier?s Lawn Sprinkler Service, which he operated until 2014. He was a lifelong member of the Highland Trinity United Church of Christ Church. He was an avid golfer and a member of a trumpet trio, ?Generations II.? Vernon loved being with his family; his most meaningful times was spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Jeanne of the home; son Mike Dreier and wife Amy of Lindsborg; daughters Joanna Bjerum and husband John of Newton, and Angie Dreier of Boulder, Colo.; brothers Galen Dreier of Newton and Curtis Dreier of Hot Springs, Ark.; sisters Luella Deane Frey of Newton and Yvonne Messamore of Fort Smith, Ark.; and four grandchildren, Nicholas and Ryan Dreier, Davy and Lina Bjerum.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and brother LeRoy D. Dreier.
Graveside services and interment will be at?1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Highland Church Cemetery followed by the memorialsServices at 2 p.m. at the Highland Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Newton.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established with the Vern Dreier Memorial Fund to which will be used for the Good Samaritan Fund of the church or for a Scholarship Fund for instrumental band students at Hesston High School.
