OBITUARY: Todd Scott Akers

Todd Scott Akers, 57, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at his home in Newton.

He was born on Aug. 28, 1964, in Newton to Eldon and Marian (Orpin) Akers. He married Patrice Murphy on Nov. 11, 1989, and they were married for 32 years.

He is survived by his wife, Patrice of the home, son, Ian Akers, daughters Ashley Akers (Noah Schmidt) and Megan Akers (Hunter Kerr), sister Deborah Akers-Hurley, mother Marian Akers, beloved dogs, Sophia and Lanie, cat Roxy, and grand doggies, Stella and Sydney.

Todd worked for the city of Newton Parks Department for 35 years and was passionate about keeping the parks beautiful and safe for the community to enjoy. His cheerful attitude, bright smile and infectious laugh will be dearly missed. Todd always knew how to carry a conversation and make you feel valued. A sentence his family heard a lot from others was, “he is one of the nicest people I have ever met.” He was an outstanding athlete and state medalist in track and still holds the NHS school record in the 400-meter dash. In 2014, he was inducted into the NHS Athletic Hall of Fame. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams and attending their events. Todd also coached special Olympic basketball for about eight years. He loved spending time with his wife, kids and pets.

He was proceeded in death by his grandparents, father, Eldon and brother, Michael.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton with family present from 6-7:30 p.m. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, at First Church of God.  Private inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial fund has been established to assist the family with expenses and contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Kan., 67114.
