OBITUARY: Susan Koehn

Susan Koehn, 88, died Nov. 29, 2022, at Comfort Care Home in Newton.

She was born March 14, 1934, in Newton to Albert A and Susanna “Jane” (Krehbiel) Goering. On Oct. 21, 1952, she married Charles E. Koehn Sr. in Newton, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 2004.

Susan was a longtime active member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Newton. She served as the treasurer and on the governing board.

Susan had a lifetime of involvement in the Newton community. A few of her posts included being a member of the board of directors for the Charles Olsen Memorial Music Scholarship, a member of the Kauffman Museums board, a member of the Bethel College Association board and a past president of the Junior Reading Circle.

In 2014, she was named a Newton/North Newton woman of the year.

A graduate and class valedictorian of Newton High School in 1952, Susan was honored in 2019 to receive the Newton High School Distinguished Alumni Award.

She was an animal lover and shared her beloved dog Shorty with the community as a therapy dog that she trained herself.

When most people would be slowing down in life, Susan put her energy and passion into the Carriage Factory Art Gallery. The gallery was suffering and considering closing their doors. She refused to give up on the organization that now is thriving in downtown Newton. She served as the president for 10 years well into her ’80s.

Susan is survived by her sons Charles E. Koehn Jr. and Matthew (Amy) Koehn; daughter Karen (Scott) Barnhart; brother-in-law Clay Hedrick; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Nancy Hedrick.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 15 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Newton with the Rev. Richard Osborn, celebrant. Private family interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials may be made to Comfort Care Home or Carriage Factory Gallery and left with Petersen Funeral Home.
