OBITUARY: Sandra Kay (Sanderson) Johnston

Sandra Kay (Sanderson) Johnston, longtime Newton resident, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, April 2, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born Aug. 17, 1944, to Freddie L. and Norma J. (Anderson) Sanderson in Corpus Christi, Texas. They preceded her in death. She married Franklin Dale Johnston in Tulsa, Okla., on Aug. 29, 1962. He also preceded her in death.

With her late husband, she owned a local business, Franklin Industries, and was active in local politics and the Newton Art Association. Later in life, she was a passionate ballroom dancer, participating in competitions across the Midwest. She also served many roles with the First Presbyterian Church, most recently as a deacon. Known as GiGi, Sandi also was an enthusiastic grandmother, proudly sharing their exploits to all her friends.

She is survived by her sons, Brigg Johnston (Pam) of Lake Zurich, Ill., and Brian Johnston (Michelle) of Leawood; a brother, Dennis Sanderson (Susan) of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister, Andrea Jones (Mark) of Wichita; three grandsons, Samuel Johnston, Corrigan Johnston and Brendan Kelly; three granddaughters, Sarah Johnston, Cassidy Johnston and Camden Kelly; two nephews, Kyle Sanderson and Jake Rostetter; and two nieces, Debra Sanderson and Maggie Rostetter.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 8, fwith family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Scott McGinnis and the Rev. James W. Anderson officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Alcoholics Anonymous, First Presbyterian Church and Newton Memorial Library, all in care of the funeral home.
