Robert Whomans, 93, of Newton passed away August 2, 2023, at Paramount Living and Rehab. He was born October 4, 1929, in Wellington, the son of John W. and Florence (Meyers) Whomans.
After high school, he entered the Army and proudly served his country for two years. Robert married Mary Ann Hawkins, and they were married for 69 years. Robert worked for 50 years at the same job. He was the asphalt foreman for Rhoades construction, which eventually became APAC. During that time, Robert was nominated and won a national award for laying asphalt without any imperfections.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Hazel Whomans; step-father Detmer Allison, brother, Paul Whomans, and sisters, Maxine O’Neal and Mary Yahnke.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughter Diane Schrag (James); son, David Whomans (Rhonda); brothers, Lee Allison (Judy), Howard Allison (Becky) and Arthur Allison (Sandi); sisters, Rose Allison (Nick), Joyce Lancaster (Nelson) and Marjorie Keazer (Curtis); grandchildren, Tiffany Paulson, Michael Irving (Amanda), Adrien Irving, Bethany Irving, Justin Robert Schrag (Kelli), Meghan Szawielenko (Aaron) and Robbie Kurtz (Crystal), 18 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Robert will be loved and missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will greet family and friends at a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Kan., 67114.
