OBITUARY: Richard W. Smith

Richard W. Smith 81, died on March 15, 2022, at Paramount Health and Rehabilitation in Newton.  He was born January 11, 1941, in Pueblo, Colo., the son of William V. and Pearl (Larsen) Smith.   He attended school in Goodland.

After school, he went to work for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked for 40 plus years.  He took leave from the railroad and served two years in the army from 1963-1965. Following his active duty service, he continued serving his country 27 years in the Army Reserves.  Richard was a member of the American Legion Post 2, Newton.

Survivors include a brother, Galen Smith (Betty), sisters Eleanor Sendek and Crystal Black.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside committal service will at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 26, in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Friday, March 25, at Petersen Funeral Home.

Memorials in Richard’s name can be made to Newton American Legion Wayne G. Austin Post 2 and left with Petersen Funeral Home.
