Obituary: Richard L. ‘Dick’ Lockhart

Richard L. “Dick” Lockhart, 87, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, at Newton Medical Center in Newton. He was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Liberal to Cecil and Ella (Ekhoff) Lockhart. On Oct. 26, 1980, he married Rollande Comeau in Denver, and she survives him.

Dick was a graduate of The University of Kansas, earning a degree in engineering and geology, and he retired as a geophysicist for Lockhart Geophysical, which he founded in 1978. He was a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicist and Rocky Mountain Association of Geologist.

He enjoyed hiking, travel and photography. He also enjoyed fine art, especially pastoral and natural scenes. Dick moved to Newton from Denver, and with his wife by his side, developed their rural property into a park-like setting, where they spent many hours together. He had a passion for and was a student of the commodities trading market, where he made many friends. One of the most important parts of Dick’s life was his family. He encouraged frequent visits and socialization with his family and many friends. He also looked forward to family reunions that were every three years at different western U.S. locations.

Dick is survived by his wife Rollande of Newton and daughters Connie Ellefson of Denver and Janice Mueller of Oneonta, N.Y. He also is survived by three grandsons, Ian and Ben Ellefson, and Max Mueller; and two great-granddaughters, Sophie Mueller and River Ellefson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Dawn Marie Adams; sister Luella Mayer; and brother David Lockhart.

Funeral service was on Friday, Nov. 18, at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with The Rev. Donna Voteau presiding. Private family burial was in the Norwich Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Nascence Fund in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
