OBITUARY: Randolph ‘Rannie’ Schmidt

Randolph “Rannie” Schmidt, 91, of Goessel, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at Bethesda Home. He was born on May 29, 1932, in Goessel, the son of Peter J. and Katherine (Unruh) Schmidt. He was the youngest child, with four older siblings: Elsie, Dorothy, Harvey and Bill.

He was united in marriage to Meribeth Boese on Sept. 4, 1953, in the Goessel Mennonite Church. They raised two children, Cindy and Russ.

Rannie was a lifelong dairy and grain farmer at rural Goessel. He also spent many years as a high school and college basketball referee, which he enjoyed immensely. After retiring from farming, he greatly enjoyed driving a school bus for the Goessel schools.

He was a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and was active as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, youth sponsor and janitor.

Rannie is survived by his wife of 70 years, Meribeth Schmidt of Goessel; and children, Cindy Hastings of Newton, and Russ (Bart) Schmidt of San Francisco, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and son-in-law, Gene Hastings.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, Goessel. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Home in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, PO Box 96, Goessel, KS, 67053.
