Obituary: Percy Vaughn

Percy Vaughn 82, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Wister, Okla., to James W. and Rosa (Lucas) Vaughn. On June 2, 1961, he married Fern Jones at Guthrie, Okla., and she survives of the home.

Percy served his country in the U.S. Army in peacetime Korea, and he was a retired dispatcher for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton, where he faithfully served the church for many years in many capacities including as a deacon and on the Board of Officers. He enjoyed woodworking and was known for his mechanic skills. He was a kind and giving person of time. Percy’s most important time was spent being with his loving family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife Fern of Newton; and daughters Pam and her husband Gregory Rodriguez of Newton, and Teri Sergeant and her partner Jeff Eubank of Emporia. He also is survived by five granddaughters: Shanda, Alisha, Kaitlynn, Stasia and Megan, and two great-grandsons, Liam and Ethan.

Percy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Buck and Basil Vaughn, sister Tess Huckaby and six nephews.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton with Pastor Mike Ronan presiding. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
