OBITUARY: Michael ‘Mike’ Martinez

Michael “Mike” Martinez, 69, died peacefully on Oct. 27, 2022, at his home in Newton. A rosary will be at 6 pm on Friday, Nov. 4, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The family will receive friends following the rosary. Celebration of Life will be Saturday, Nov. 5, 1-5 p.m., at the American Legion in Newton.

Mike is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lynnette, two sons, Nicholas Martinez and Jason Kapuscinski (Cara), two daughters, Jennifer Mantz (Scott) and Margo Stinchcomb (Jon), eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by sister Christina “Tina” Trujillo (Dave), brothers Roderick Martinez, Robert Martinez (Lynn), Richard Martinez and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Roman and Valeria Martinez, and sister Mona Martinez.

Mike was born in Montezuma. At age 5, his family moved to Newton where he resided for the rest of his life. He attended school in Newton, graduating in 1971 and attended Cowley County Community College on a football scholarship, graduating in 1973. He started working in the Newton Line Department with KG&E in 1973 and retired from Westar Energy in 2015. Over the years, Mike was involved with many activities including the Jaycees, Special Olympics and coaching little league football. He officiated high school wrestling for 32 years. His favorite past times were fishing, camping and watching the OU Sooners and Kansas City Chiefs play football. Mike and Lynnette resided in Newton for 26 years and so enjoyed many camping trips with friends and family.

He helped many people in various ways and felt it was most important to take care of and be there for his wife, children and grandchildren.

Donations are being accepted through family and Petersen Funeral Home. All funds will be given to the Pratt Community College Lineman Program.
