Mary Patrica Kaufman

Mary Patrica Kaufman “Pat” 86, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

She was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Newton to Richard C. and Catherine (Bernard) Morgan. She attended Newton High School followed by semesters at Kansas University and Emporia State University.

Pat traveled the world when she started her career as a flight attendant for TWA in 1957.   She flew with TWA until she was 28.  On June 6, 1964, she married her high school sweetheart, Clayton D. Kaufman. Clayton and Pat were active in the Newton Community through their involvement in Junior Reading Circle, the Elks Club, the Newton Country Club, and St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Pat was an active mother of two children, Kimberly and Rex. Pat enjoyed spending quality time with family traveling, camping, skiing and throwing awesome pool parties. She also took pride in moving out to the farm they purchased in 1978. Clayton was diagnosed with ALS in 1983 and they both helped start the ALS support group in the Wichita/Central Kansas area. Clayton passed away in 1986 and Pat moved to Wichita in 1993. She was active with several lady groups playing cards, enjoyed entertaining friends and loved spending quality time with family.

Pat is survived by one son, Rex (Mary) Kaufman of Newton; one daughter, Kimberly (Richard) Ortega of Louisville, Colo.; one sister, Gwen (John) Suderman of Newton and one sister-in-law, Maggie Morgan of Newton. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Clayton J. Kaufman, Lucas D. Kaufman and Quinten R. Ortega.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Richard “Dick” Morgan and one sister, Gail Morgan.

Inurnment will be at 2 p.m., Nov. 5, in Greenwood Cemetery Memorial followed by a 3 p.m. memorial service at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Donna Voteau presiding.  This will be followed by a gathering (celebration of life) for friends and family at Sand Creek Event Center,

Memorials are suggested to the Newton Public Library Foundation, as Pat was an avid reader. Donations may be left with Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
