Lois F. Heintz, 100, died Friday, June 9, 2023, at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She was born Oct. 28, 1922, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Gustav and Gladys (Lowrie) Backlund. On March 4, 1943, she married Dean D Heintz at Mitchell, South Dakota, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2016.
Lois was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Newton and was a retired cosmetologist with her own shop near Towanda she ran for many years. When she wasn’t working or caring for her husband and family, she enjoyed being in her yard and tending flowers and gardening. She also kept active, taking various classes through the years, such as jewelry making and tole painting. In her later years, she made her home at Newton Presbyterian Manor, where she made new friends and continued to keep active with crafts and attending the church services.
Lois is survived by three daughters, Joan Petersen, Jean Cherrington and Lynn Burgess; one brother, Charles Backlund; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; infant son, Vaughn; and sister, Delores Osborne.
Graveside committal service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton with Pastor Charles Claycomb presiding. Visitation was from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice or Salem United Methodist Church and left with Petersen Funeral Home.
