Obituary: Lilla Gates

Lilla Mae Gates, 92, died Monday, May 23, at Kansas Christian Home and was reunited with her Lord and children.

Lilla was born July 24, 1923, in Pawnee, Okla., to Oliver and Lola Mae (Wilton) Brenneman. She married Robert Cornwell, who preceded her in death, and later married Carlton Gates, who also preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, two sisters and one brother.

She was a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, both in Newton, and also was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 5 Newton. Lilla was a longtime member of the Newton First Baptist Church. She was a joy to all who knew her and found the silver lining in every situation. Her favorite quote was “it will all work out.” She will be missed dearly by her loving family, close friends and those who cared for her daily.

Lilla is survived by nieces Marilyn Kurtz of Kansas City, Kan., and Susan Sabin and her partner Kerin Trapp of Thornton, Colo.; one great-niece Shannon Kurtz of Kansas City, Mo.; and many who loved her dearly.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with Pastor Chip Bungard presiding. Order of the Eastern Star Rites will be given at the chapel. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials are suggested to American Legion in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
