OBITUARY: Kenton M. ‘Butch’ Mathews

Kenton N. “Butch” Mathews, 77, died Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

He was born Nov. 15, 1943, in Newton, to Horace and Eleanor (Sattler) Mathews.

He was a member of the River lawn Christian Church in Valley Center. Kent retired as a supervisor for the United States Post Office in Newton.

He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and going on road trips with friends. He also enjoyed spending time flying remote control airplanes, fishing and hunting with his family. Colorado camping trips with his kids as they grew up were especially fond memories.

The family would like to thank Good Shepherd Hospice and Newton Presbyterian Manor for their excellent care of Kenton.

He is survived by his sons, Darren and Selena Mathews and Alan and Kim Mathews, one daughter, Kimberly and Dennis Schmidt. He is also survived by his former wife, Jogene Mathews, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many friends.

Kent is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pamela Ingram.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Monday, April 26, at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Josh Gores presiding. Visitation was Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery Newton.

Memorials contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s association, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
