OBITUARY: Jerry Pete Morris

Jerry Pete Morris, 84, retired truck driver and hog producer, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.

He was born June 7, 1938, in Wichita to Rayta and Pete Morris. He had one brother, Jimmy Dean Morris. Jerry started working when he was nine years old at the bowling alley. After school, he joined the United States Army as a light vehicle driver where he was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana.

He married Elnora Mable Morris on March 5, 1959 in Ville Platte, Louisiana. They met at the Evangeline Dance Club in 1958 and had 63 wonderful years together. He is survived by his children, Debra Catherine (Kendal) Bohrn of Sedgwick, KS, Mona Faye (John) Benewiat of Halstead, KS, Kelly Ann (Brad) Fix of Valley Center, KS, and Jerry Michael (Meredith) of Sedgwick, KS; grandchildren Joshua (Angela) Bohrn, Jarrod Bohrn, Kelsea (Cody) Abney, Whitney (Christopher) Thompson, Kristen (Brett) Geiger, Tyler Fix, Devin Fix, and Josie Morris; 13 great-grandchildren. After the military, he worked at Cabot as a welder and then started truck driving in the evenings. He returned to Wichita, KS in 1961 began working for Fleming as a truck driver. Jerry started farrowing hogs in 1969 and 1972 they purchased the farm in Sedgwick, KS where we started farrow to finish hog farm which transitioned to a 5 barn operation producing 14 days to finish hogs. Jerry was a dedicated pig farmer and has passed his operation to his grandson Joshua Bohrn to continue. In his younger days, he was an avid bowler, traveling and bowling in tournaments. In the late 80s he started to enjoy golfing and at times he would enjoy hunting. For many years he enjoyed working for Lakin Township as a treasurer to help improve township roads.

He was a quiet man but known for being direct. He was firm believer that reputation is everything. He will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jimmy Morris

Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Kaufman Funeral Home; the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, also at Kaufman Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Halstead Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be given to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in care of Kaufman Funeral Home.
