OBITUARY: Hulda Schrag

Hulda Schrag, 88, passed away on Jan. 19, 2023. Hulda was born on May 13, 1934, in Marion County, the daughter of David F. and Mary (Flaming) Voth.

Hulda married John LeRoy Schrag on Oct. 26, 1954, at Tabor Mennonite Church.

Hulda prioritized her faith, marriage, family and church community. She loved keeping in touch with each of her kids and was especially delighted in staying connected with the grandkids on their many adventures.

In 1980, she began her career as a registered nurse and enjoyed being able to use her skills and knowledge to help others.

Neighbors and friends could count on her to be compassionate, kind and supportive when in need of assistance to get through a rough patch.

Driven to excel, when she gardened, it was a huge plot, a plentiful harvest and a busy canning season. When she baked, it was dozens and dozens of zwieback or cinnamon rolls. When she sewed, it was entire outfits—school clothes for the kids, three-piece suits for her husband, curtains all around and later, quilts for all the beds in Schrag homes, college dorms, first apartments, etc.

Along with her husband, John, those remaining to celebrate her life include her children, Connie, Oris (Kathy), James (MaryBeth) and Steve (Marsha), and grandchildren Allison (Ky), Liz (Matt), Nik, Amy, Kelli and Adam. Hulda also is survived by her brother, Elmer (Lynne) Voth and sister, Darlene Schroeder.

Hulda was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Esther Unruh, Wilma Schmidt, Alice Duerksen and infant sister, Betty.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, at Faith Mennonite Church, 2100 N. Anderson Ave, Newton. Memorial gifts may be made to Kidron Bethel, in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, Kan., 67062.
