Howard Clarence Wedel, 97, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016, at his home in rural Peabody.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1919, in rural Moundridge to Herman and Christina (Voran) Wedel.
He married Louise Entz on Sept. 10, 1951, in Newton, Kansas. She preceded him in death.
Howard always wanted to be a farmer. He loved working outside and enjoying God’s creation all around him. Howard also worked in construction about 20 years for Cliff Cummings with Cuckler Building Systems in Newton. He appreciated the new friends and acquaintances he made putting up metal buildings all around the area.
He is survived by his children: Art and Jana Wedel, Marlin Wedel, and Lillian Wedel; brothers: Wilmer and Clarence Wedel; sisters: Ruth Andres and Jane Entz; five grandchildren Amanda Wedel, Julie and Tim Martens, Amy Wedel, and Andrew Wedel; and great-granddaughter Kaylie Martens.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Christina Wedel; and family members Stanley Wedel, Verna Regier, Elisabeth Regier, Eleanor Wedel and Kenneth Wedel.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Zion Mennonite Church in Elbing. A graveside committal service will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. at the Zion Mennonite Cemetery. A public visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 13, at Petersen Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to greet friends and family members.
Memorials may be given for Mennonite Central Committee or the A.V. Fund at Zion Mennonite Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
