OBITUARY: Gregory Allen Sanchez

Gregory Allen Sanchez was born Dec. 14, 1955, in Wichita to Isaac and Belen Sanchez.

Greg returned home on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 after a long and hard fight. He took his last breath at 4:34a.m., surrounded by his wife, children and best friend at St Francis hospital in Wichita, at the age of 63.

He graduated from Newton High School in 1974 and later graduated from WTI with an associate’s degree in electronics.

 He married Rosie Corona on July 5, 1980. They lived a full life in Newton with their children and family.

A self-taught musician, Greg loved playing the guitar and bass throughout the years and also played in several bands. He was known as “The Blues Man.” He enjoyed going to blues festivals and attending concerts. He was a member of the Cowboy Action Shooting, which he built targets for and was also a proud supporter of the NRA. He loved to bow and rifle hunt and was a welder for over 40 years.

 He was currently employed at Excel Industries in Hesston. You could often find him outside smoking and grilling food on his smoker/grill that he welded, himself. He enjoyed sitting outside in the nice weather, listening to music, while enjoying a beer. He gave advice, lectures and almanac predictions to anyone, who would listen. There wasn’t a day that he didn’t make someone laugh. His favorite cat, Carl, enjoyed sleeping on his head, each night.

He leaves behind his wife, Rosie Sanchez; son, Isrrael Sanchez; daughters, Olivia (Juan) Negrete, Rose Sanchez, 15 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Michael (Tracy) Sanchez, Robert (Jeanette) Sanchez; sister, Carrie (Linn) Lapp, very best friend/brother Jimbo (Debbie) Honaker, Father-in-law Lupe Corona and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac (Belen) Sanchez and son, Ricardo Sanchez.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton, followed by the Recitation of the Holy Rosary.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

Friends called at the funeral home on Friday, from 1-8 p.m., where the family received friends between 5-7 p.m.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases Association, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Kan., 67114.
