OBITUARY: Gayle Jane Schmidt

HUTCINSON—Gayle Jane Schmidt passed away Friday, April 19, 2019, at Hutchinson.

Gayle was born Nov. 4, 1957, at Hillsboro, the first child to Willis R. and Marilyn Kay (Halpain) Schmidt. The first two years of her life were spent on a farm at rural Hillsboro. The family later moved into Hillsboro. Gayle later was joined by a sister, Carmen. 

Gayle lived with her family until she graduated from Hillsboro High School and moved to McPherson where she enrolled in the licensed practical nursing program. She graduated the following year and moved to Wichita to take a job in a nursing home. For the first 10 years of her career, she worked in several nursing homes. She then moved to Hutchinson to take a job at Hutchinson Hospital where she worked for 25 years, living in Hutchinson. After four back surgeries, the last one leaving her with severe nerve damage, she was no longer able to walk without a walker and could no longer work. She remained in her home for three more years until she was no longer able to walk at all and then went to Wesley Towers, Thorne Care Center in June 2015.

She was preceded in death by her father Willis Schmidt, and grandparents Herman and Susie Schmidt and George and Bessie Halpain.

She is survived by her mother: Marilyn Kay Schmidt, Newton; sister: Carmen Kaufman, nieces: Chelsea and Ali Kaufman, nephew: Zak Kaufman, all of Kansas City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church with Pastor Donna Vouteau officiating.

Memorials may be given to Caring Hands Humane Society in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.
