OBITUARY: Fern Irene Nunn Flournoy

Fern Irene Nunn Flournoy was born at home July 12, 1938, in Bolivar, Mo., and died in Whitewater at Wheat State Manor on Dec. 26, 2023.

She was born to Marvin D. and Maude W. (Scott) Nunn in Bolivar, Mo. She is the youngest of six children. She moved around a lot as a child but her parents finally settled in Eureka, Kan. She attended high school at Tonovay, outside of Eureka.

She married Brentz Gilder, and from this union, Madeline was born. They divorced. She,then married Dale Guisinger who adopted Madeline. Later together they adopted Gary. They divorced. She then married Barney Flournoy.

Fern had been a resident of Newton two different times. She first came to Newton in 1966. She moved to Wichita in the mid ‘80s. After that, she moved around. She was in New Mexico, then California, back to New Mexico, then Texas before returning to Newton in 2004. She lived in Newton until May 2023 when she moved to Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.

While living in Newton, she was a waitress at several local restaurants. Those restaurants included West Wind, The Guest House, Ramada Inn, one restaurant that was housed in the Newton Train Station and Charlie’s at Newell’s Truck Stop. Many people would wait in long lines to be able to sit in her section. She also worked parties for Lions Club, Rotary Club and many other events including wedding receptions.

She loved doing several different kinds of crafts, word find puzzles, watching birds and butterflies. She also loved to grow all types of flowers but especially roses. She also enjoined watching TV. She was a cat lover and collected lots of items with cats on them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Barney Flournoy, brothers Ray Nunn, Roy Nunn, Byron Nunn and Gene Nunn, sister Helen Roberts, a granddaughter, April Large Moore, one niece and three nephews.

She is survived by daughter Madeline Large (Bruce), son Gary Guisinger, both of Newton; step-daughter Diana Harpin (Riley) of Texas; step-sister Vera Jones (Harold) of Valley Center; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be at 10 a.m. April 5 at First Baptist Church, Newton officiated by Pastor Chip Bungard. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. April 5 at Eureka Cemetery, Eureka.
