HALSTEAD—Eugene Wendling, 98, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 9, 1920, north of Bentley to Leo Theodore and Daphne Mae (Watts) Wendling.
He was a farmer, stockman and lifelong area resident.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Ruth-Wilson-American Legion Post 231, Halstead Historical Society, Hertzler Research Foundation, Halstead Hospital Board of Trustees, Halstead Lions Club and Kansas Livestock Association. He was the 1972 Kansas Farm Bureau District Leader of the Year and served 16 years as a Harvey County commissioner.
On Nov. 6, 1946, he married Marcelline “Marcy” Moran in McCracken,. She preceded him in death June 3, 2003.
Survivors include sons David (Nina) Wendling and William (Marilyn) Wendling, all of Halstead; daughters, Jean Anne (Greg) Gleason, Halstead, and Mary (Jerry) Klutzke, Wichita; brother, Leo Wendling Jr., Richardson, Texas, sisters Ruby Harris, Topeka, and Vivian Bush, North Hollywood, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, and the Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Halstead, with Father Jeffery Fasching officiating.
Burial will follow at Halstead Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Kansas Learning Center for Health or Halstead Community Foundation Sacred Heart Fund in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.
