OBITUARY: Eldon Eugene Akers

NEWTON—Eldon Eugene Akers, 87, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021, at Newton Presbyterian Manor, Newton.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1933, in Newton, to Lawrence and Evelyn (Marsh) Akers.  He married Marian Ruth Orpin on June 24, 1953, and they were married for 68 years.  They loved playing cards and played rummy daily. The loser had to do the dishes.

He is survived by his wife, Marian of the Manor, son, Todd (Patrice) Akers, daughter Deborah Akers Hurley; grandchildren Lynn Hurley, Holly Hurley (Justin Jones), Kelsey Akers, Madison (Kai) Starwalt, Joshua Akers, Ashley Akers (Noah Schmidt), Megan Akers (Hunter Kerr), Ian Akers; and great-grandchildren, Tanner and Tate Starwalt.

Eldon was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge where he was a 33rd Degree Mason (Shriner) for more than 50 years.  Eldon retired from Westar after 38 years of service as a foreman. He was a basketball and football referee for 25 years.  In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams and attending their events. He loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers James and Kenneth, and son Michael.

Private family graveside service was on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Greenwood Cemetery.

Broadway Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
