Obituary: Doris J. Hawkey

Doris J. Hawkey, 86, died Monday, April 23, 2018, at her Newton residence.

She was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Newton to David and Mathilda (Frey) Buller. On April 13, 1951, she married Gene Hawkey at Newton, and he survives.

Doris was a longtime active member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton. She was a member of the Piece Makers quilting group at the church in addition to participating in many other ministries of Trinity Heights through the years.

She was chapter administrator for the Society of Decorative Toll Painters in Wichita prior to her retirement. She enjoyed painting, especially landscape paintings and quilting. Doris had a love of shopping and browsing antique stores for the next addition to her many varied collections she acquired during the years. She especially enjoyed collecting P. Buckley Mass Prints.

Doris’ most important role in life was that of loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her loving friends and loving family.

She is survived by her husband Gene of the home; daughter Shirley Thompson of Riverside, Calif.; son Gary Hawkey of Newton; brothers Bob Buller and Jerry Buller, both of Newton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Austin Hawkey.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church with Pastor Donna Voteau presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 26, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A public graveside service will precede the funeral at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, at the Highland Cemetery in rural Newton.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Heights United Methodist Church or Good Shepherd Hospice in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
