Carl Ray Barber, 55, of Newton died Wednesday, July 6, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born to Carol and Archie Barber in Cherokee, Okla.
He had three sons; Daniel, Anthony, and Jeremy. Carl was a family man who loved spending time with his family. He drove a school bus in Tyron, Okla., for many years before driving for the Newton school district. He always made sure he took care of “his kids.” Every year for birthdays and Christmas, he made sure each kid who rode his bus got a gift.
In Oklahoma, they had turtle races at the end of the school year, every year. Carl made sure to collect enough turtles on his route to give every one of the kids a turtle for the races. He enjoyed fishing, especially with the grandkids when they were younger, played dominoes, pinochle and cards, and he also coached baseball. Carl loved movies, especially westerns, and “Walker Texas Ranger.” He loved to read; his library contained at least 1,000 books. Friends and family remember him as the most likable guy, funny and ornery.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Carol Barber; brother, Bill Barber; and stepfather, Charles Cargill.
He is survived by sons, Daniel Barber, Anthony Barber and wife Shannon, and Jeremy Barber and wife Tanya; brother, John Barber; sister, Dixie Johnson; and grandchildren, Tatum Barber, Katie Wilson, Kassie Barber, Maeghan Altman.
Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 8, at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton. Memorial suggestions are to the Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton.
