OBITUARY: Betty Jean Underwood

Betty Jean Underwood, 95, died Jan. 17, 2022, at Pine Village in Moundridge.

She was born May 27, 1926, in Wetumka, Okla., to Ralph Carson and Thelma (Wilde) Young.

On May 19, 1945, she married John “Jack” Underwood in Wichita, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1990.

Betty was a long-time active member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where she served on many committees through the years. She was also in the Rachel Circle of the church.

In addition to her church, Betty was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, and playing cards and games. She also was a square dancer in her younger years. Her greatest joy was her family. She looked forward to family vacations and spending time with her daughters and all her grandkids. Attending her grandchildren’s school programs was a special joy.

She is survived by her three daughters: Kathy (Don) Howard, and Janet Huber and Brenda (Stacy) Vogts; stepsister Stanley (Stan) Floyd; and seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son-in-law Steve Huber.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with the Rev. Donna Voteau presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton.

Memorials may be made to Pine Village or First United Methodist Church and left with Petersen Funeral Home.
