Water restored for southern part of Newton after main breaks

A water main has burst on the north side of S. Kansas Ave, resulting in water service to the area south of 24th Street being turned off, according to a City of Newton release.

As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a significant amount of water could be seen bursting from the soil into a ditch just south of the SW 24th St and S. Kansas intersection. A northbound lane of S. Kansas Ave was closed to allow crews to address the problem. A nearby fire hydrant was also opened up to assist crews in dealing with the issue.

City of Newton Director of Communications Erin McDaniel said crews had completed an emergency locate of the break at 5:45 p.m.

By 7:15 p.m. crews had restored service.
