Two died and two are in critical condition following the wreck of a commercial passenger van at I-135 and the Southeast 14th Connector.
Newton Public Information Officer Erin McDaniel said the vehicle was traveling southbound on I-135 this morning around 8 a.m.
“When the interstate goes over the SE 14th Connector, it separates into two bridges,” she said, explaining the crash. “The van went into the median where the bridge starts, went down the embankment between the two bridges, and crashed into the bridge pillar.”
That left the van resting, not on I-135, but on the southeast 14th Connector below. Two of the van’s occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, and two were transported to a Wichita hospital.
Kansas Highway Patrol is working the wreck. No names of those involved have been released. McDaniel said that no identification of the occupants was immediately available, but early indicators are that the victims are not local.
“Our police department’s impression was these were workers and it was a commercial vehicle, and they were passing through,” she said.
This marks the second fatality wreck in the area in less than a week.
Kenneth McGuire, 62, of Newton, died July 19, following a motorcycle wreck on the SE 14th St Connector on July 19.
