Staff shortage cuts Amtrak dates

With staff out dealing with COVID-19, Amtrak will cut service on the Southwest Chief for  Monday and Tuesdays until the end of March.

The announcement was made by  Amtrak today as it deals with the impacts of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

“Despite Amtrak’s rigorous vaccination and testing program, several hundred of our on-board service personnel, conductors, engineers, and mechanical crews continue to be impacted by Covid infections or exposures, particularly given the highly infectious nature of the new variant and the prevalence of breakthrough cases,” the release stated.

Other routes impacted include the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Texas Eagle, Capitol Limited, Lake Shore Limited, City of New Orleans and Silver Meteor.

The release said impacted customers would be re-accomodated.
