Newton police took two people into custody following a short chase and manhunt Friday afternoon.

According to Newton Director of Communications Erin McDaniel, Police received a tip of a stolen vehicle in Newton.
Police located the vehicle they believed to be stolen in the 1600 Blk of N. Main and attempted to pull it over.

A short chase ensued, the vehicle wrecked near 14th and Main and both occupants, a man and a woman, exited on foot.
The woman was captured shortly after in the nearby Subway restaurant.  Law enforcement continued to look for the man.
“They received report that this was a wanted felon that was believed to be armed,” McDaniel said.

That belief prompted a large scale response including officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol, The Harvey County Sheriff’s Department, North Newton Police Department, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office all helping in the search, many armed with assault rifles or shotguns.

He was eventually found in the area of Applewood Court.

The City released his name to be Tariq Gragg. The woman’s name was not available at this time. McDaniel said they did not find a firearm on Gragg, however she added that police continue to search the area for a fire arm or evidence.

Records show that Gragg, 25,  had a previous arrest for domestic violence in Johnson County in 2012, as well as a probation violation arrest in Harvey County in April of this year.
