After three years, Newton Now named best in state

By Newton Now Staff

At an award banquet Saturday, the Kansas Press Association named Newton Now the top paper in the large weekly circulation category for 2018.

State papers were judged on a variety of categories, including feature writing, news writing, government coverage, editorial writing, column writing as well as on photography, use of photos and layout.

Newton Now earned 15 first-place recognitions and placed in 23 overall categories, resulting in its distinction as the best large circulation paper distributed between one and three times a week.

The awards are a testament to the hard work of our staff,” Publisher Joey Young said. “I am very proud of the work they do every day in Newton and Harvey County.

Competitors included magazines such as the Wichita and Kansas City Business Journals as well as large weekly papers across the state.

Staff received plaques to commemorate the achievement, which will be hung in the Newton Now office at 706 N. Main St.

“Usually it’s a big deal for a reporter to win two or three awards,” Managing Editor Adam Strunk said. “I was happy for Wendy (Nugent) and for the publication as a whole to receive from our peers the same acclimation that readers give us weekly.”
