Power out across county, tornado reported after strong storms

By Harvey County Now Staff

Power was out in parts of Harvey County after a line of severe fast-moving storms tore off roofs and tore down power lines and trees in Halstead and Newton around 7:40 p.m. May 19.

Much of the county was out of power, and as of 9 p.m., Evergy’s outage map included 7,500 customers in the Newton area, 1,340 in the Halstead area,1,300 in the Sedgwick area and 1,000 in the Burrton area.

Halstead Fire/EMS also reported that the town had been hit by a tornado and asked people to stay home as it evaluated the situation.

Reporter Bill Bush stated that the city was difficult to navigate due to downed trees and power lines. He also witnessed winds fast enough to carry off a porta-potty at Halstead Middle School.

The Newton Police Department has also asked the public to remain at home due to the city’s closed roads, downed trees and power lines.

With the situation in progress, we will provide an update tomorrow when we better understand the damage.
