A pick-up truck struck and killed a Newton woman walking on South Kansas Road Thursday night.
At 9:33 p.m. the Sheriff’s office was dispatched to a vehicle collision with a pedestrian in the 4800 blk of South Kansas.
Undersheriff Shawn Chapman identified the woman as Linda Yeubanks, 55 of Newton.
According to family members she lived in an apartment in Newton.
Her body was found in the inside lane of the road.
He said that an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office continues, and he was waiting on interviews with the drivers and reports to be filed to provide more information.
“It was right by that old gas station,” he said. “You wouldn’t expect someone to be in the roadway. That’s not an area where you’re looking for people to cross.”
The area is outside of Newton, rural and unlit. Chapman said the driver of the S-10 Chevrolet pick-up truck was tested negative for impairment from substances at the scene.
