The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate at the McPherson County Jail.
On Thursday, April 8 at approximately 2:15 p.m. Kevin Brittingham, 55 of Newton, was arrested for domestic battery and booked into the McPherson County Jail. According to information provided by McPherson County Sheriff Jerry Montagne during the booking process Brittingham was placed in a booking cell.
McPherson County Correctional Officers found Brittingham unresponsive in the booking cell at approximately 3:35 p.m. Lifesaving measures were attempted. Montange says those measures included administering CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). McPherson Fire and EMS responded to the jail and continued to attempt resuscitation efforts. Despite those efforts, Brittingham was pronounced dead at approximately 4:05 p.m.
The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office requested the KBI investigate as is required by law. The KBI investigates all deaths of individuals in the custody of a Kansas jail or prison, unless the inmate is being regularly attended by a physician.
Montagne says Brittingham’s injuries appear to be self-inflicted and an autopsy will be performed.
