A man died in an apartment fire in the 800 block of N. Walnut Tuesday night in Newton .

Around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 20 Newton Fire/EMS responded to the call, eventually calling Hesston Fire/EMS for backup.

“It’s one structure but there’s two apartments in the house,” Deputy Fire/EMS Chief Phil Beebe said. “A couple lives in one half. They smell the smoke and called it in.”

Beebe said the couple got out safely and their half of the building received little damage. The adult man on the other side was not as fortunate.

“When we got there the patient was in cardiac arrest,” Beebe said. “They tried to resuscitate  on scene.”
Beebe said attempts were unsuccessful and the person, an adult male, was pronounced dead.

Crews got the fire put out while also battling a waterman break on scene that flooded the street.
The man’s name was not released before press time Tuesday night.
Beebe also did not give a cause for the fire and it remains under investigation. He said with a fatality, the state fire marshal’s office will be called into investigate.  The article will be updated when more information becomes available.
