Vehicle occupant gets away after fleeing traffic stop

A man escaped after fleeing Newton law enforcement on foot following a traffic stop.

Newton Police Officers pulled over a vehicle Monday around noon near Robbins Motors at 1515 E Broadway for having illegal vehicle tags.

The vehicle, an older model white four-door car, had a male and a female occupant. After the officer began speaking with the occupants the man got out of the vehicle and fled.

Police detained the female, while they searched for the man.
Newton Communications Director Erin McDaniel said police know who the man who fled was, and after a search decided to not engage in a manhunt to find him.

“This guy doesn’t seem to have a record to indicate that he was wanted,” she said. “They just have misdemeanors on him for tag issue for running . They haven’t caught him and decided it’s not worth a manhunt. There’s no reason to believe he’s a danger to the public.”

McDaniel said law enforcement will continue to keep an eye out for him.

McDaniel said Marijuana was found during the search of the vehicle that followed the occupant fleeing.
Police could be scene speaking with a person in handcuffs. McDaniel did not have information if that person was being detained or charged with a crime.
