Obituary: Mary D. Gatz

Mary D. Gatz, 90, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2018, in Emporia.

Mary was born April 5, 1928, in Clonmel to Balthazar and Katherine (Goerings) Lies.

Mary was married on May 22, 1956, to William Francis Gatz at St. Mary’s Church in Newton. They were married for 43 years prior to his death on May 4, 1999.

Mary and William lived and worked on a farm. Mary also worked at Hehr Midwest for almost 15 years.

Mary loved to garden and work with flowers. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and hunting with her husband. She was a good hearted, and generous person whom enjoyed life and celebrating it.

She is survived by her children: Bill and Valerie Gatz, Annette and Steve Taylor, Cheryl and Kevin Byrne; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers and two sisters.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Newton. The Mass of the Resurrection will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Following the Mass, a Committal Service will be at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established for Hand in Hand Hospice, 1201 W. 12th Ave., Emporia, KS 66801. Petersen Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
