Prairie View president/CEO certified in youth mental health first aid training

Twenty percent of youth experience mental disorders in a given year, and Prairie View’s president and CEO Jessie Kaye is now certified to train groups learning how to support a young person experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Kaye’s recent certification as a Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor qualifies her to teach groups to help a youth until professional care arrives. She is the only certified instructor in Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid in Harvey County.

Groups can receive training during an eight-hour workshop. The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents and can be offered in the workplace, in faith settings or in public venues.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants risk factors and warning signs of various mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), disruptive behavior disorders and substance use disorder. Prior to certification, Kaye completed a five-day training specifically in Youth Mental Health First Aid. Earlier this spring she completed certification in Mental Health First Aid to train participants in techniques for responding to adults experiencing mental health or substance abuse challenges.

To schedule a training, phone Betty Hague at 316-284-6310. Indicate if you are scheduling a training for Youth Mental Health First Aid or Mental Health First Aid for adults. Each training is eight hours.
